  10. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 15 minutes until the top is golden and bubbling. Let rest 15 minutes before serving.

tips for Success

  • Meat Sauce: For the richest flavor, use a blend of beef and pork. Slow simmering is key – it deepens the sauce’s complexity.
  • Fresh Pasta: Resting the dough is crucial to develop gluten and ensure pliability. Don’t rush rolling out thin sheets to avoid tearing.
  • Béchamel: Stir constantly when adding milk to prevent lumps. If lumps appear, strain the sauce or use an immersion blender gently.
  • Make-Ahead: Meat sauce and béchamel can be made 1-2 days ahead and refrigerated. Fresh pasta can be covered tightly to prevent drying out.
  • Substitutions: For a vegetarian version, swap meat sauce with layers of grilled vegetables and mushrooms, maintaining béchamel for creaminess.

Serving Suggestions

Slice the lasagna into hearty squares and plate with a fresh arugula salad tossed in lemon vinaigrette to balance the richness. Garnish each portion with a sprinkle of chopped fresh basil or parsley and an extra grating of Parmigiano-Reggiano.Pair with a robust red wine, such as a Sangiovese or Chianti, to complement the wine-aged meat sauce.
